Hepatitis Awareness Month

May is Hepatitis Awareness Month, a time to spread awareness about this disease and how it affects millions of people. Learn more about symptoms and treatments.

Hepatitis Awareness Month serves as a crucial reminder of the importance of understanding and preventing this potentially serious liver disease. Pinnacle Family Health stands out as a beacon of support during this awareness month, offering vital resources and assistance for those in need.

Hepatitis, which is an inflammation of the liver, can be caused by various factors including viral infections (hepatitis viruses A, B, C, D, and E), alcohol consumption, certain medications, toxins, and autoimmune diseases. The symptoms of hepatitis can vary depending on the cause and the type of hepatitis, but common symptoms include:

  1. Jaundice: A yellowing of the skin and eyes is a classic symptom of hepatitis, indicating liver dysfunction.
  2. Fatigue: Feeling unusually tired or weak is a common symptom of hepatitis.
  3. Abdominal Pain: Pain or discomfort in the area of the liver (upper right side of the abdomen) can occur.
  4. Loss of Appetite: Hepatitis can cause a loss of appetite and subsequent weight loss.
  5. Nausea and Vomiting: Feeling sick to your stomach and vomiting can be symptoms of hepatitis.
  6. Dark Urine: Urine might appear dark, similar to the color of cola, due to increased bilirubin levels.
  7. Pale Stools: Stools can become pale or clay-colored, a sign of problems with the liver or bile ducts.
  8. Muscle and Joint Aches: Some people with hepatitis experience muscle and joint pains.
  9. Fever: A mild fever can be present, especially in acute cases of hepatitis.

It’s important to note that not everyone with hepatitis will have noticeable symptoms. In some cases, people can carry the virus unknowingly and remain asymptomatic for years. If you suspect you have hepatitis or have been exposed to the virus, it's crucial to seek medical advice promptly for proper testing and diagnosis.
