Let's Talk Vitamins

Although the CDC recommends most people get the vitamins and nutrients they need from a balanced diet, there are spcific groups who may benefit from supplements.

According to the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), most people should be able to get the vitamins and nutrients they need from a balanced diet. However, there are specific groups who may benefit from taking certain vitamin supplements:

  1. Folic Acid: Women who are pregnant or planning to become pregnant should take 400 micrograms (mcg) of folic acid daily to prevent neural tube defects in the developing baby.
  2. Vitamin D: People who don’t get enough sun exposure, older adults, and those with darker skin may benefit from taking Vitamin D supplements for bone health.
  3. Iron: Pregnant women may need to take an iron supplement to prevent iron-deficiency anemia.
  4. Vitamin B12: People who follow a vegan or vegetarian diet, and older adults, may need to take a Vitamin B12 supplement as it’s primarily found in animal products.
  5. Calcium: Older adults, particularly women, may need to take calcium supplements to help maintain bone strength.
  6. Vitamin C and Zinc: These are often recommended to help support the immune system, especially during cold and flu season, although this is not specific CDC guidance.

It's important to talk to a healthcare provider before starting any supplement, as individual needs vary.
